  36. The CIX Software CD provides all the software you need to launch you onto 
  37. the Internet, allows you to participate in the unique world of computer 
  38. Conferencing, send worldwide Internet email, surf the World Wide Web 
  39. (WWW), create your own web page(s), download software and much, much, 
  40. more...

  42. If you have the CIX Software CD, insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive and 
  43. follow the onscreen instructions.  It caters for the complete new 
  44. user/novice to upgrade solutions for existing subscribers and 
  45. non-supported third party software products.
  46.  
  47. The CD contains:

  49. The latest version of Ameol - v2.50 for 32-bit users, 2.12 for 16-bit
  50. users.
  51. The latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer
  52. A wide selection of Addon and third party software products for Ameol, 
  53. including:

  55.     Acronyms: Decode acronyms by right-clicking on them
  56.     AdnExec : Put all addons on one menu.

  77. CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET
  78. --------------------------
  79.  
  80. If you wish to use your CIX Internet internet connection outside of Ameol v2
  81. you will need to enter your internet username/password the first time you see
  82. the Connect To... dialog box. To do this:
  83.  
  84. 1. Double-click the Internet Explorer icon in your CIX Software group
  85. 2. In the dialog that opens, enter your ICA username in the Username field.
  86. 3. In the same dialog enter your password in the Password field.
  87. 4. Click the "Save Password" box if you want Windows to save your ICA password.
  88.    If you do not ask Windows to save the password you will need to enter it every time
  89.    you want to connect to the internet.
  90. 5. Click the Connect button. After using Internet Explorer your username and password
  91.    will be saved.

  93.  
  94. DISCONNECTING UNDER WINDOWS 3.X
  95. -------------------------------
  96.  
  97. Under Windows 3.x, the Microsoft dialler will not automatically disconnect after
  98. an Internet Explorer or Ameol connection is completed. To disconnect, double-click
  99. on the Connection icon in Program Manager and click on the Disconnect button.
  100.  
  101. DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING AMEOL2
  102. =================================
  103. There are two versions of Ameol; a 16-bit version for Windows
  104. 3.1, 3.11 and 3.11 for WorkGroups, and a 32-bit version for Windows NT
  105. 3.50 or later, or Windows 95. You can install and run the 16-bit version
  106. under Windows NT or Windows 95, but you cannot install or run the
  107. 32-bit version under Windows 3. Windows 3.x users with WIN32S 
  108. must use the 16-bit version as WIN32S does not support comms.

  110. The setup file is a Windows installation executable. Run it from within
  111. Windows and follow the instructions.
  112.  
  113. Users of Ameol v1.xx - Please don't install Ameol v2 into the same
  114. directory as Ameol. The installer will not allow you to do this, but
  115. please don't try it anyway. There is a facility to import your Ameol v1 
  116. database if you want to, this will start automatically the first time 
  117. you start Ameol v2 if Ameol2 can detect your Ameol v1 database. If it 
  118. does not start automatically you can run it by selecting 
  119. File|Import|Ameol Import Wizard.

  122. SUBMITTING REPORTS
  123. ==================
  124. Choose Submit Report from the Help menu to submit any reports or 
  125. questions regarding Ameol or CIX.
  126.  
  127. USING AMEOL ADDONS
  128. ==================
  129. All Ameol addons should work fine with Ameol v2 (excluding those
  130. mentioned below which have specific problems). If in doubt or you are
  131. experiencing problems, please contact the author of the addon directly.
  132. It is our intention that all existing Ameol addons work directly under
  133. Ameol v2 with no changes. Those which will not work should only
  134. require minor modifications to allow them to work properly.
  135.  
  136. To install an addon under Ameol v2, use the Install Addons command on
  137. the Settings menu.
  138.  
  139. The following is a list of addons which have known problems.
  140.  
  141. Questionnaire
  142. -------------
  143. This will not run under Ameol v2. 
  144.  
  145. Report
  146. ------
  147. The Report addon is now built into Ameol v2. You should not attempt
  148. to install the old Ameol report addon or a conflict will occur.
  149.  
  150. Get Missing Messages
  151. --------------------
  152. Version 3.01 of GETMM incorrectly adds two 'Get Misc Msgs' commands to
  153. the end of the Folder menu. This cosmetic bug is corrected in version
  154. 3.03 which is in beta test.
  155.  
  156. Thread Manager
  157. --------------
  158. The functionality of this addon is now integrated within Ameol v2 and
  159. is no longer required. The author recommends that you do not use this
  160. addon with Ameol v2.
  161.  
  162. Immediate Message Deletion
  163. --------------------------
  164. The functionality of the IDEL addon is now integrated within Ameol v2
  165. and is no longer required. However it will continue to work with Ameol
  166. v2.
  167.  
  168. Acronyms
  169. --------
  170. Ameol v2 provides its own ROT13 capability on the Edit menu. The
  171. Acronym addon is still required for the decoding of acronyms.
  172.  
  173. Gallery
  174. -------
  175. Ameol v2 provides a simple mugshot viewer without support for sounds
  176. or the more sophisticated features of Gallery. If you wish to use Gallery
  177. instead then disable mugshots in Ameol v2 as follows:
  178.  
  179. 1. Choose Preferences from the Settings menu.
  180. 2. Click the Viewer tab.
  181. 3. Uncheck the 'Show authors mugshot when message is displayed'
  182.    option.
  183. 4. Click OK to close the dialog.
  184.  
  185. Note that the current version of Gallery does not use the MUGSHOT.INI
  186. file created and maintained by Ameol v2.
  187.  
  188. Show Conference Information
  189. ---------------------------
  190. SHOWCONF v2.03 will crash if you have a conferencing folder name longer
  191. than 14 characters in your In Basket. This is not necessarily a bug with
  192. the addon which was designed only to work with CIX conferences names
  193. which are limited to a maximum of 14 characters.

  195. File Find Manager
  196. -----------------
  197. Because FFIND v1.02 relied on a undocumented window class not supported
  198. in Ameol v2, it is unable to display the Tabs along the top of the
  199. window. FFIND v1.03 is available now from ameol.support/files.
  200.  
  201. General File Editor
  202. -------------------
  203. AMEDIT v1.02 will not work if the In Basket window is not open. A newer
  204. version, v1.03, is now available from the ameol.support/files conference.
  205.

  207. COMPATIBILITY WITH AMEOL
  208. ========================
  209. This section explains some areas in which Ameol v2 is compatible
  210. with Ameol. Please read this section after installing Ameol v2 for the
  211. first time.
  212.  
  213. Keystrokes
  214. ----------
  215. Where possible, we have tried to keep the keystrokes used by Ameol v2
  216. identical to those used in Ameol. This includes Ctrl+T to initiate a
  217. blink, Ctrl+E to open the Export dialog and so on.
  218.  
  219. You can easily customise the keystrokes from the Customise dialog
  220. in the Settings menu.
  221.  
  222. Ameol Configuration
  223. -------------------
  224. The 16-bit version of Ameol v2 does not use a configuration file in
  225. your Windows directory. Rather it stores the configuration file in the
  226. USERS subdirectory. Within that subdirectory are further subdirectories
  227. for each user. By default, Ameol v2 creates a user called
  228. Administrator and stores the settings in the ADMIN.INI file in the
  229. USERS\ADMIN subdirectory.
  230.  
  231. The format of this file is similar to AMEOL.INI, but is not the
  232. same. Do NOT attempt to migrate your Ameol configuration to Ameol v2
  233. by copying over your AMEOL.INI file. It will not work.
  234.  
  235. The 32-bit version of Ameol v2 stores configuration in the registry.
  236. Two registry locations are used:
  237.

  257. There is no provision for multiple message databases in Ameol v2.
  258.  
  259.  
  260. KNOWN PROBLEMS AND WORKAROUNDS
  261. ==============================
  262. There are a few known problems with Ameol v2 which we were unable to
  263. fix before release. A fix for these should appear in the near future.
  264. Keep your eye on the ameolnews conference for an announcement of a free
  265. upgrade.
  266.  
  267. Aborted downloads when using TAPI (Telephony Modem)
  268. ---------------------------------------------------
  269. CIX displays the contents of a downloaded file in the terminal
  270. screen then reports "Download aborted". To cure this select
  271. Settings|Communications, select the blink type you are using to
  272. connect. Click Edit and change Dial Up Conferencing (Win95/NT)  to 
  273. Dial Up Conferencing (Ameol).
  274.  
  275. Pause then disconnection under Windows95/NT
  276. -------------------------------------------
  277. Using Dial Up Conferencing (Win95/NT) under Windows95 or NT, you 
  278. connect to CIX but nothing happens for a minute or so, then Ameol 
  279. v2 disconnects.
  280. Open the file ameol2\script\connect.scr in a file editor such as
  281. notepad. Directly after the "pause 1000" line, enter
  282.  
  283. put ""
  284.  
  285. Save the file and Ameol v2 will connect correctly.
